How does Ayurveda relate to Yoga?

Ayurveda is the healing branch of Yoga for body and mind. It teaches us how to live according to our unique mind-body constitution and develop our yogic potential for higher awareness.

Ayurveda is not just for medical professionals but for everyone for self-healing and Self-realization. Its prime therapy is our own behavior and daily lifestyle. This can work wonders for us and we can do it for ourselves.

Ayurveda is primarily a behavioral medicine teaching us right living at an individual level according to our doshas, gunas and karmas and our related physical, mental and spiritual constitution. How you live is the measure of your health and happiness.

The three doshas are Vata, Pitta and Kapha as the biological forces of air, fire and water in the body as energized by prana or the vital force. They are the main factors governing health, wellbeing and longevity according to Ayurveda.

There are extensive tests you can do as well as a study of all the relevant factors in our courses and books. You can also see an Ayurvedic practitioner for help as needed.

Ayurveda uses herbs as its main healing modality in a wide variety of traditional and modern preparations and combinations. Many Ayurvedic herbs are available worldwide in natural food and herb stores or by mail order. They include many common spices as well. Our courses and books go into these in detail.

The master Prana addresses energy and revitalization through the head; Udana for speech, motivation and inhalation, through the throat; Samana for balancing the body and our vital energies and aiding in digestion, in the region of the navel; Apana for facilitating elimination and also for stabilizing reproductive energies at the base of the spine.

Ayurvedic psychology teaches us how the three doshas (Vata, Pitta and Kapha) and three gunas (Sattva, Rajas and Tamas) regulate psychological wellbeing through the senses, mind and higher intelligence. Knowing your predominant dosha and guna is key for overall wellbeing of body and mind.

Your mind is the essence of the food that you eat according to the Ayurveda. Ayurveda teaches you how to change this for peace and clarity of mind.

Your senses provide a subtle form of nutrition for the mind. Ayurveda teaches us how to evaluate our sensory nutrition just as the food we eat.
